Welcome to Land For The People! My vision for this site is to inspire people to preserve vast amounts of wild and natural land in perpetuity. We need your help, not only to donate to our land trust partner, but also to inspire others and spread the word. Please join me in crafting our vision and shaping our message to others. This site is much more than a vehicle to raise funds, and I hope you will join our community.
While I’ve been an advocate for conserving land and have promoted environmental concepts for years, during a trip to Hawai’i in 2005 I had the idea of founding a grassroots and internet-spread campaign to ask people to donate as much money as possible through a land trust partner. Read the ‘Aina story to hear more about my inspiration. As I thought about the structure of my campaign and the website, I wondered what form of message would reach and sway the largest number of people. As I debated different forms and bemoaned the lack of focus on environmental issues, there was a fairly radical shift in general environmental awareness when Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth was released. I thought, Now people are talking carbon credits and carbon offsets! I would have an easier time making the argument for adding funds to the pot for conservation!
I also knew that I needed help to launch the idea and keep it fresh. Some dedicated folks who share my vision have joined with me, and I ask you to join with us as well. This interactive site will be shaped through your contributions. We established the forum as an idea exchange so that your voice, not just mine, ends up on our front page. Soon we will add a video component so that you might send us mini-documentaries of land that you would like to preserve and your ideas for action. The blog will keep you posted on current thoughts and ideas, and watch for guest bloggers to appear.
I want to point out that Land For The People is not set up to take donations. We purposely partnered with an internationally known and respected land trust that would use funds donated through the link on this site for preserving open and wild land. Founding Land For The People is a labor of love and a commitment to the Earth: we receive no money from your donations. Those involved with this site donate their time, and even the cost of the website and hosting. We want all the funds you donate to go towards preserving land.
This site is not just for my voice, but yours as well. I hope you will join our community and share your comments and ideas so that you might inspire others. We will continually update the site content based on your ideas. We will host guest bloggers, and will post your eco-ideas to the front page of the site.
Please let others know of this community and help us get the word out so that we might conserve land now.
