I’ve been inspired to work on the Resources page of this website and have a whole list of goodies to add. Please stay tuned. I was nudged to get going with this after co-facilitating a water ecology workshop this weekend. We shared information about local action and resources and there is so much more to add. Well, the site is live and I’m just starting to promote it. I’ve realized that there will be many layers and waves of getting the info about Land For The People out there. I set up a YouTube channel to help get word out about this site and will also need to get word out about that!

Please check out our channel: LandForThePeople. Of particular interest might be the playlists I am creating of environmental videos. Read the rest of this entry »

Why Conserve Land?

There need to be places on this planet where land is untouched and preserved. I want to reiterate a paragraph from a previous blog entry:

I too often hear, But no one’s DOING anything with that land! Like so many other people, I used to look at open land and say, Nothing is there. We are more used to the notion of developing land into something, or using it for something. The notion of wild land has become a radical concept in the last century. Not only is it healthy for the planet to have large untouched and wild areas, wilderness regions are the birthright of all the peoples of this planet. We need places where we can experience the pure power and majesty of nature doing its thing. While some lands might be available for visitors to explore and experience directly, we also need untouched areas that preserve the biodiversity of the planet.

I could see her point, though, that people might think we were realtors, or a group that aids people looking to transform open land into…something. So let me tell you about the vision behind the name. Read the rest of this entry »

A magical and bittersweet journey to Hawai’i inspired the founding of Land For The People. I found beauty, power, unique landscape and ecosystems on my visit to the islands of Hawai’i and Kaui’i. As wonder-filled a visit my mate and I had, the shadow of over-development was always present. It didn’t stop me from enjoying the trip, but it did inspire me to create change in a more active and widespread way.

‘Aina is the Hawai’ian word for Land. The word is considered sacred and carries not just the mundane meaning of the ground beneath our feet, but also the living Earth and all its elements—the basis and interconnectedness of life. I am careful with my use of the word, knowing that it might be considered appropriating—I’m a white girl from the U.S. mainland, after all. I hope that my use of the word with respect and for the good of Hawai’ian peoples and the Earth causes no consternation.
